Why Homeschool High School Students?
When we think about home schooling, we often think about younger children being taught at home. We imagine that they will be sent out into the traditional school setting when they get to high school. However, more and more parents are choosing to homeschool high school students. There are many different reasons why this occurs.
One reason to home school high school students is to make sure that a student who has been asked to leave the high school for some reason or another gets to finish his or her education. High schools are very strict when it comes to behavior problems and students who do not obey the rules or who have significant behavior problems are often expelled from school. There are some instances where a student may make a poor decision, such as bring marijuana to school, and be kicked out of school. What is a parent to do?
Many parents who have a child who has been expelled from high school choose to home school. Many people who homeschool high school students do so because they do not want to have to enroll their child into a special program or another school district. This way, the child can finish up his or her studies at home and still earn their diploma.
Another reason why many people home school high school students is to give a gifted child, or one who needs extra help, the benefit of daily tutoring. Some children sail through the lessons taught in high school without hardly even opening up a book. Others struggle with each lesson. Every child learns at a different pace, yet a teacher can hardly be expected to give each of his or her students their undivided attention. Children who have a difficult time learning in a traditional setting, or those who are far ahead academically, can benefit from home schooling. Many of the parents who choose to home school high school students do so because their child does not do well in a traditional setting.
Still another reason to home school high school students is the safety issue. Some children live in areas where the high school is on constant lockdown. Metal detectors are present at the entry and police guards patrol the halls. Students are often in fear for their lives as gang shootings are a way of life in the school. It is very difficult for a child to learn in such an environment as this, yet most parents find it impossible to move away for lack of funds.
To combat the above situation, many parents choose to home school high school students so that they can learn in the safety and comfort of their own home. Not all high school experiences are pleasant and many parents feel that sending their child to school every day is an actual risk to the welfare of the child. For this reason, many opt for home schooling.
Bullying is yet another reason why many people choose to home school high school students. Some kids spend their entire high school years dodging bullies or being called names by other kids. This absolutely shatters the self esteem of any child. Bullying, at best, can harm the self esteem of a child. At worst, it can cause a child to take his or her own life. Each year, we hear about high school students who kill themselves because of bullying. A child who has been targeted by bullies seldom has a chance in school. In some cases, a parent is doing the right thing when they choose to home school high school students who are the target of bullies. This enables the child to learn and alleviates the pressure of having to contend with bullies on a daily basis.
Other reasons why parents home school high school students relate to the health of children who may be too ill to go to school on a regular basis or teens who become pregnant while in high school but who still want to continue with their education. There are many reasons why some parents choose to home school high school students and for some parents as well as students, this option is the best remedy.
